Jeffersonian Influences

Most Americans know of Thomas Jefferson the statesman – founding father, writer of the Declaration of Independence, and third President of the United States.

But they may be less familiar with the breadth of his interests (travel, wines, music and plantings, to name just a few), his keen curiosity, or his remarkable talent for innovation.

It is this Thomas Jefferson – epicurean, intellectual, farmer and inventor – that has so inspired his namesake hotel, informing every aspect of its design and culture, from the literal (original documents signed by Jefferson on display in the lobby) to the evocative (a Book Room inspired by Jefferson's insatiable appetite for reading).

Guest rooms, for example, are designed to evoke Jefferson's years in France, down to the draperies fashioned from three original toile patterns inspired by the textiles Jefferson brought back from Paris to enhance his own home – his beloved Monticello.

One of these custom creations is a pastoral print of Monticello's grounds and the other depicts architectural details from five Jeffersonian buildings.

One of the more literal Jeffersonian influences is found in Quill, where our design team has re-created the parquet flooring Jefferson designed for Monticello's main salon. A collection of 18th-century maps on the walls of Quill follow Jefferson's journey through the wine regions of France, Germany and Italy.

Thomas Jefferson's passion for wine takes center stage in the Private Cellar, our private dining room, with its walls lined with wine display cabinets and private wine lockers. A dumbwaiter inspired by Jefferson's own, which he designed for Monticello's daytime study, conveys vintages ordered by guests to the dining room.

Jefferson's interest in wine is also reflected in the vinotherapy treatments featured at the Spa at The Jefferson, which utilizes herbs and botanicals grown at Monticello. And at Plume, Chef Damon Gordon draws inspiration from those same gardens for his culinary creations that blend European classicism with American innovation.
